You may or may not have heard of the term “imposter syndrome.”
I am not sure we ever really “overcome” imposter syndrome. I just think some choose to allow it to control their destiny, and others decide to simply move forward anyway. Basically, the idea is that you feel like a “fraud” or feel “less than” when putting out your work or stepping into what you feel called to do.
Maybe you are an author and have been putting out your work for some time, but you still do not own up to the fact that your work IS good and that it IS serving other people. You are always tempted to downplay your success. Perhaps, you just have an idea for a creative project or a business that you would like to pursue but you are crippled by fear and feelings of inadequacy because you think, “Who am I to put my work out into the world?”
No matter where you are on the spectrum, many of us face this sinking feeling of “not enoughness,” and, unfortunately, it keeps many of us from truly stepping out into our fullness.
Let me tell you a story that I hope will help.
Several years ago, I attended a conference. A woman was speaking who I greatly admired. She had built a HUGE organization and, to me, seemed fearless. When I went up to meet her afterwards, I overheard her lean over to her friend and say, “Was that ok? Oh man. I feel like I blew it up there. I was so nervous.”
I know this may seem strange, but that was one of the most memorable moments of my life.
Here was someone who seemed like she had it all together, someone who had success I could only dream of, and she still had self-doubt.
I hope today you recognize that just because you feel inadequate, doesn't mean you are.
We need you.
We need your gifts.
We need your talent.
Even if you are scared...show up anyway.
